WHAT KINDS OF SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE?
Upon completion of a single application, students may be eligible for more than 150 scholarships and book awards administered by SF of East Providence. Some sponsors designate scholarships for students graduating from high school or for students who attended vocational school. Other scholarships are earmarked for students already enrolled in college. Some scholarships are designated for specific fields of study.
HOW ARE SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED?
Scholarships are awarded based on need and merit. An awards committee scores applications anonymously, with merit points assigned for school and community activities, academic achievement, work experience, career goals and unusual circumstances. To determine financial need, applicants are required to submit a copy of the completed standard federal aid form, FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) that is available at www.fafsa.com.
Using a point system, awards committee members score applications for academic achievement, work experience, school and community involvement, aspirations and goals, unusual circumstances, and an appraisal by a guidance counselor or advisor. In this way, students from a wide variety of backgrounds receive our scholarships. Some may have high academic scores. Some are very involved in their school, church or community. Some work many hours after school to help save for college or to help their families. Some have overcome or are facing major hardships in their life.
Half of our scholarships are awarded to enrolled students and half to graduating high school seniors. Scholarships must be used within the following academic year.
